What we’re about
Started in 2010 in Melbourne, our group focuses on the social issues around software and technology. We avoid deeply technical discussion since plenty of other groups do that. We meet monthly, have a presentation and some discussion, then some chat about current news. Some of us then continue the discussion over dinner at a nearby restaurant. Other times we hold free software games nights, host visiting international guests, or run public events like Software Freedom Day.
As a result of lockdowns FSM meetups were being held Online, a tradition that continued after the lockdowns were lifted. That lead to the decision of the 2021 Committee to extend the scope of the group to Australia and rename the group to Free Software Australia.
Our members range from newbies to experts and we have a significantly more gender diverse attendance than similar groups. Our members are excellent towards each other as per our Code of Conduct.
We have some concerns about centralised web services like Meetup.com, so please don't feel obliged to register or RSVP on Meetup, just come along. Check out our website and subscribe to our news feed or mailing list.
