ABOUT
Join us for an adventure that starts and ends in Oxted, where we explore landscapes just beginning to reawaken after winter, and where fresh greens, longer daylight and wide open views define the day. Before summer foliage softens the horizon, the ridges feel open and expansive, with far-reaching views across the Weald.
The terrain is varied and engaging, crossing commons, woodland, quiet country lanes and open fields as we cover real ground across the North Downs landscape. The walk passes through historic hamlets such as French Street and Crockham Hill, where centuries-old cottages sit quietly among rolling countryside. Hidden within the folds of the land lie the evocative remains of Weardale Manor, while the historic setting of Tenchleys Manor adds another quiet layer of heritage.
We move through the historic landscape surrounding Chartwell and the terraces of Emmetts Garden, where early spring colour begins to emerge across the slopes. Woodland sections offer filtered light through still-open branches, while higher ground delivers broad skies, exposed stretches and a strong sense of seasonal transition.
Underfoot conditions can vary in late March, with firm chalk ridges contrasting with softer woodland paths, keeping the day interesting and dynamic. It is a time of brighter mornings, returning birdsong and a countryside poised between winter structure and spring growth.
This is a walk of layered history and varied scenery, from ancient woodland and manor ruins to grand country houses and sweeping downland views, experienced at one of the most refreshing and energising moments of the year.
After the hike, there is an optional visit to the Wetherspoons by the station, with a 30-minute train back to central London.
