OVERVIEW
π Distance: 29 km (β18 miles)
π₯Ύ Difficulty: Strenuous
ππ Elevation: 509 m ascent / 589 m descent
β‘οΈ Point-to-point (Start: Lewes, End: Brighton)
πΆ Walking pace: We will walk at a purposeful, brisk pace, typically around 5 to 6 km/h. The pace will ease slightly on climbs and descents and increase on flatter sections. You should be comfortable maintaining a strong overall pace throughout the day.
π² Terrain: The route follows classic South Downs chalk downland, including grassy ridgelines, worn single-track paths, and sections of flint and chalk underfoot. Expect repeated long, steep climbs and descents. While non-technical, the terrain is physically demanding over distance, with exposed ridges, little shelter from wind or sun, and potentially slippery conditions when wet.

HIKE DESCRIPTION
Join us for an energising and challenging South Downs hike from Lewes to Brighton.
Our journey begins in the historic town of Lewes. We'll leave via the scenic route, walking through the Lewes Castle Barbican and past the impressive castle before joining a peaceful stretch along the River Ouse.
As we leave Lewes behind, we'll tackle our first moderate ascent into the South Downs National Park, passing notable landmarks including Mount Harry and Blackcap. From here, we'll continue along the wide-open South Downs ridgeline towards Ditchling Beacon, the highest point of the South Downs, where we can pause for a well-deserved ice cream and take in the spectacular views.
Our journey then heads south through shaded woodland towards the picturesque village of Stanmer, where we'll stop for lunch. Here you'll find picnic tables, open green spaces, and the opportunity to grab a coffee before we continue. After lunch, we'll head towards Falmer and take on some more steep ascents, including the climb up Falmer Hill. From the summit, the sea and the city of Brighton come into view, providing a rewarding reminder that the finish is getting closer.
We'll then descend towards Brighton, ending our walk along the seafront. If we're fortunate enough to have a warm, sunny day, there may even be the option for a quick dip in the sea (don't forget the flip-flops).
Before heading home, we'll stop at Wetherspoons, conveniently located on the way back to the station, for an optional social drink. It's a chance to relax, celebrate completing one of the South Downs' classic routes, and chat with fellow hikers before catching the train back to London.
