PLAN B PROPOSAL - Arundel Circular | 22km (13 miles)

There has been a train derailment between Haywards Heath and Lewes, so services are currently suspended. As a result, we have changed the event at short notice to provide an alternative option. Unfortunately, the tickets are non-refundable on the day of travel. If you would prefer not to join the alternative event, that is completely fine. We can issue the group tickets to organised groups of four people who wish to travel and hike independently.

📍 MEETING POINT
AdrianB will be at the meeting point with the group tickets

08:00 – Meet at the London Victoria ticket office and check train availability for Arundel.
08:15 – Walk to the platform and board the train.
08:35 – Train departs London Victoria.
10:02 – Arrive at Arundel.
10:05 – Hike starts at Arundel railway station.
16:30 – Hike finishes in Arundel town centre.

Return trains from Arundel to London are scheduled for: 17:14, 17:45, 18:14 and 18:44.

If you decide to leave the group and hike independently, you may do so in a group of four. Once you have agreed on the four people travelling together, I can issue you with a group ticket. If you cannot form a group of four, you will need to remain with the main group.

ABOUT
We begin along the River Arun, looking out for wildlife and birdlife before heading through open fields towards Burpham and Rackham Hill, with wide countryside views. After descending towards Amberley, we return to the river along narrow footpaths before continuing through Arundel Park and past Swanbourne Lake. The walk finishes in historic Arundel, where you can explore the town, enjoy a café or pub. The route includes riverside paths, hills, fields, woodland, narrow trails and some boggy ground (in winter), offering a varied hike.

## IMPORTANT UPDATE ##

📢 Hi everyone,

There has been a train derailment between Haywards Heath and Lewes, so services are currently suspended.

A replacement bus service may operate, but this would add considerable travel time and could involve further disruption.

Unfortunately, DaySave (group tickets) tickets are normally non-refundable.

When I spoke to Southern Railway, the agent explained that if the line reopens, including with a replacement bus service, the tickets would not be refundable.

Any refund would require a staff member to override the system, but staff are currently dealing with the incident and are unable to assist.

Trains may be able to run via Brighton from London to Seaford or Eastbourne, but this has not yet been confirmed. Any such service is likely to be reduced and take considerably longer.

It is therefore be best to avoid the entire area and any replacement bus services.

As DaySave tickets allow unlimited travel across the Southern Railway network, we can still use them for an alternative hike.

Possible alternative options include (subject to train availability):

[1] Arundel Circular: Arundel to Amberley, then looping back to Arundel, approximately 22 km

[2] Surrey Hills Circular: a Dorking circular via Denbies and Leith Hill, approximately 26 km

We completely understand if you no longer wish to attend.

However, please note that we can only refund your payment if someone else takes your place, as Southern Railway is unable to provide a refund for the tickets.

If you would prefer the group ticket to be given to you, you will need to arrange the four people to travel with you together.

Please also note that if you become the holder of a group ticket, any potential eligibility to make a Delay Repay claim may be lost.

Please consider the options and vote in the chat. We will proceed with the option that receives the majority vote.

ℹ️ LAST SPACES CLAIMED (2026-08-13 - 13:25)
---
Anyone who signs up for a group ticket but does not pay within a few hours will be removed from the event to free up spaces for those waiting. Tickets are allocated on a first-paid, first-served basis until all spaces have been filled.

Group Travel Ticket (Optional)
The organiser will pre-purchase Southern Railway DaySave group tickets a few days before the event. Tickets can be viewed HERE

Each ticket costs £52 and covers four people, making the cost £13 per person. Payment must be made in advance, and all four passengers must travel together, sit together on the train, and pass through the barriers together at both ends.

The organiser will try to arrange compatible groups based on attendees’ travel plans. If a suitable arrangement cannot be agreed, AdrianB will retain the ticket and coordinate the group’s travel. At the barriers, the organiser will present the group ticket to the barrier staff, and the entire group will pass through the barriers together. If possible, please sit in the same carriage as the ticket holder. If an inspector asks to see your ticket, explain that you are travelling as part of the group ticket and point them towards the organiser.

Each ticket allows unlimited travel on the Southern Railway network that day.

Joining the group-ticket arrangement is optional. You may attend using your own ticket or transport. The hike itself is free.

Anyone who has not paid by Tuesday, 11 August 2026, will not be included.

After paying, please message AdrianB on +44 (0) 7438 812 663 with your transaction reference and Meetup profile name so you can be identified and marked as paid. Alternatively, send a message through Meetup and provide the account name you used.
