“Sound Doctrine”

  • Emphasis on “Doctrine” in Scripture: The word “doctrine” appears 14 times in the Bible (11 times in the Pastoral Epistles: 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus). “Sound doctrine” is used 4 times specifically in these letters, which Paul wrote to instruct Timothy and Titus on church leadership, oversight, and ministry.
  • Definition of Doctrine: Essential teachings, instructions, and body of beliefs derived from Scripture regarding God, salvation, and Christian living. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
  • What Are “Sound Doctrines”? Timely biblical truths that God reveals or re-emphasizes to the Church at specific points in history to help it advance (e.g., Justification by faith in the 1500s via Martin Luther). All biblically based doctrines are good, but certain sound doctrines are especially needed in our current time. The Church is recovering truths that have always been in the Bible.
  • Warnings About False Doctrine:
  • Believers should not be tossed by “every wind of doctrine” or man-made teachings (Ephesians 4:14).
  • In the last days, many will reject sound doctrine, preferring “ear-tickling” teachers and myths (2 Timothy 4:3–4).
  • Example of common false teaching: Adding requirements like baptism for church membership (not taught in Scripture).
  • Three Effects of Sound Doctrine in the Life of Believers and the Church:
  1. Desiring It Spiritually Nourishes (1 Timothy 4:6)

Constantly feeding on the words of faith and sound doctrine keeps us spiritually healthy and strong — just as physical food prevents starvation. This happens individually (through reading God’s Word) and corporately (when gathering with revelation).
2. Knowing It Exhorts or Refutes (Titus 1:9)

Holding fast to the faithful word enables us to build up (exhort) believers and correct (refute) those who contradict truth.
Chief exhortation today: Faith in Christ + nothing = salvation and sanctification (everything).
Major lie to refute: Law and self-effort are the source for living the Christian life.
Sound doctrines of the New Covenant of Grace are especially powerful now.
3. Speaking It Edifies (Titus 2:1)

Speak things that are fitting for sound doctrine, led by the Holy Spirit. It builds up hearers, but we cannot convince or debate people into belief — only share truth and let the Spirit convict and reveal.
Avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, strife, and disputes about the Law — they are unprofitable and worthless (Titus 3:9).
Example of a key sound doctrine for our time: “You are not under law but under grace” (Romans 6:14).

  • Practical Application:
  • Spend time in God’s Word for personal spiritual nourishment and grounding in sound doctrine.
  • Know sound doctrine so you can identify false/man-made teachings and build up the Body of Christ.
  • Speak truth in love without arguing or debating; leave results to God.
  • Group reflection: Share a time you spoke sound doctrine without debating and trusted God with the outcome.

Overall Message: Sound doctrine (rooted in Scripture and revealed by the Spirit) nourishes believers, equips the Church to exhort and correct, and edifies when spoken. It counters false teachings and empowers the Church to live by faith in Christ alone under the New Covenant of Grace.
