Freedom of the Press and Its Current Challenges
Details
What is the current state of Freedom of the Press, both locally and nationally? And what can we do to protect this vital right in these difficult times? Join us in a discussion led by Bill Church, the editor of our Santa Fe New Mexican.
Bill Church is The Santa Fe New Mexican’s executive editor, director for The New Mexican Public Service Journalism Fund, and incoming executive director of Searchlight New Mexico (a statewide investigative news nonprofit). He has led news operations at the national, regional and state levels, and was executive editor when the Sarasota Herald-Tribune won a Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting. He is a former national president of the Associated Press Media Editors, a Knight Visiting Nieman Fellow at Harvard and a two-time Pulitzer jurist. He is on the publishers’ board for Stars and Stripes, is a longtime member of the Asian American Journalists Association, and a recipient of the national Robert G. McGruder Diversity Leadership Award.
He holds a B.A. with Distinction in economics from the University of Oklahoma and an M.S. in administration from Central Michigan University. He has taught university-level courses in marketing and media culture. He and his wife, Darla, love living in Santa Fe.
Freethinkers Forum meets the second Sunday of every month from noon - 1:30 pm in a hybrid format, in person at UU Santa Fe on the corner of Barcelona and Galisteo, and via zoom. To get the zoom link, go to Events on our meetup site, and click that you will attend, then you can access the zoom link at the Online event icon.
We are a gathering of freethinkers and humanists, people from all faiths or none, who come together to discuss collaboratively-chosen topics, to listen with open minds, share with open hearts, work together on social activism projects and share supportive community. Our general format is a short presentation followed by an hour or so of open discussion of the subject. All are welcome, and all outlooks on the topics are respected. We aim to learn from each other and celebrate our diversity!
