Freethinkers' Forum: Moral Theory
Details
What is morality, and how does one develop a moral theory to guide one's actions? Dr. Gregory Brown, University of Houston professor emeritus of philosophy, will lead us in a discussion of why the Divine Command Theory is a bad moral theory. We will discuss the questions that need to be answered in trying to develop a moral theory of our own, and consider why the Divine Command Theory fails to answer them adequately. Dr. Brown has published widely on 17th-Century philosophy and science, primarily on Leibniz and Newton, among others. And his book on the Leibniz-Caroline-Clarke correspondence was published in 2023 by Oxford University Press.
His discussion handout can be read or downloaded and printed at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qJGT-jSsmRIjYfZzzNDdsNh5jE1gJzOX/edit Come with your opinions, thoughts, and questions, and participate in this timely and vital discussion!
Freethinkers Forum meets the second Sunday of every month from noon - 1:30 pm in a hybrid format, in person at UU Santa Fe on the corner of Barcelona and Galisteo, and via zoom. To get the zoom link, go to Events on our meetup site, and click that you will attend, then you can access the zoom link at the Online event icon.
We are a gathering of freethinkers and humanists, people from all faiths or none, who come together to discuss collaboratively-chosen topics, to listen with open minds, share with open hearts, work together on social activism projects and share supportive community. Our general format is a short presentation followed by an hour or so of open discussion of the subject. All are welcome, and all outlooks on the topics are respected. We aim to learn from each other and celebrate our diversity!
