Judge: Jim Harais
Biography: Jim was born and raised in San Francisco. At 15 he joined the California Camera Club in which his aunt was a master. In the club he attended workshops from such photographers as Ansel Adams, who then was with the California School of Fine Arts, Edward Weston and Carl Romain. After high-school, he entered the United States Coast Guard and while stationed on the Ice Breaker North Wind was a ship ET and photographer. While at the south pole, he submitted photos for the ship to National Geographic's. Jim is a retired UC teacher and Business owner.
Philosophy:
“I believe light is everything and the image visual expression is a wonderful and effective form of communication. I look at a picture first for its impact and the story it tells me. How is it presented and what are the techniques used to present the image. I look at the composition and see if they are properly applied. Although it is just as important to know when to break them for one’s creativity. One should make an image because you love what you see. It should tell your story in your style, have impact, creativity and have good composition and presentation for others to view and enjoy, not just to enter at the last minute into a competition. “
