The Stoics had a word — Sympatheia — the idea that everything is connected. That what you do to your community, you do to yourself. That there is no clean separation between your world and the world. Community service, for the Stoic, was never charity. It was never optional. It was a moral duty rooted in the understanding that you did not build yourself alone — that everything you are was constructed on a foundation other people laid before you arrived. Marcus Aurelius, the most powerful man on earth, spent his private journal reminding himself to serve quietly, consistently, and without applause. Not to be seen doing it. Just to do it. Because virtue, for the Stoic, is not what you believe. It is not what you intend. It is what you actually do — especially when nobody is watching, nobody is keeping score, no applause, and nobody will ever know it was you.
Community well-being is individual well-being.
