What we’re about
As a French native, I have unfinished business with the classics I studied at school, so every now and then I revisit some—my own version of "searching for lost time". The idea of this group is to connect with any potential fellow enthusiasts.
In practical terms, we'll meet at the library and take turns reading selected works, and work through study aids. To set the tone, my favorite French quote is: « Ce qui se conçoit bien s'énonce clairement, et les mots pour le dire arrivent aisément. »
This meetup is intended for those with French proficiency and a genuine interest in the subject, for example, if they (have) pursue(d) a French minor/major in college.
The syllabus evolves as we go along and is posted at the bottom. It’s a good idea to read ahead of future events.
The meetup features a live English translation challenge: can those flamboyant linguists one meets around campus really hold their own?
A review of covered topics can be found at the link under "Find us also at".
This is a non-profit, unaffiliated, grassroots Francophonie initiative.

A study of Scarlett & Red, a 19th century novel
Location not specified yetThe title is a line from Le Rouge et le Noir, our next reading. It is set in Restauration society and known for its psychological depth.
Apparently, there’s a movie adaptation featuring a young Ewan McGregor.
“Devoirs” from OCR-ed old edition → https://pastebin.com/ZgzPZwvf.
In the first 10-15mn, we'll do a recap of Montaigne—think of « une phrase qui vous a marqué »
This is part of our mimetic desire thread; French proficiency expected.
« Ces mœurs si peu aimables, cette France grave, morose, que nous on léguée les Jésuites, la Congrégation et le gouvernement des Bourbons, de 1814 à 1830 ». Voilà ce qui fait l’essentiel de la Restauration aux yeux de Stendhal.
With the elimination of inter-library loans, let’s try to be resourceful in finding study aids (I have the one for R/N, not Bovary).
I’m keeping tabs on the group here → https://shorturl.at/EjAq3. Look there first for references.
