Maya Slater is a former French Literature professor at the University of London & specialises in 17th Century French Literature. Ms Slater has translated various French books. She retired to become a full-time novelist, but still lectures on French Literature. Slater's best known novel is for you Janeites (moi y compris), Mr Darcy's Diary. Slater does what honourable English translators of Molière try to do, maintain as much as possible Molière's versification into English. All the major 17th Century French plays were written in verse.

For the closest thing you will ever know to how the witty, elegant French language of Molière sounds like in English, whilst attending a play of his, in translation, get yourself copies of poet Richard Howard's Molière translations. The only Molière plays worth attending in English use Richard Howard's translations. Otherwise, Maya Slater.

Howard was a great American poet in the Formalist tradition. He was a lifelong Francophile and translated much from French Literature, including his beloved Molière.
