Twilight Tour: Revolution--Occupation--Evacuation! Revolution in Lower Manhattan

Details

Washington, Hamilton, Howe, Carleton: they all played their part in the history of the Revolution in New York City.

Along our walk from City Hall Park down to the tip of the island, so crowded today with modern skyscrapers, we'll rediscover the Revolutionary War past of lower Manhattan: the Patriots who set out for the disastrous Battle of Brooklyn; the Loyalists who stood steadfast by their King; the spies who took on desperate missions; the thousands of prisoners of war who languished in appalling conditions; the catastrophic fire, whether arson or not, that almost consumed the whole of New York City. See where princes prayed and generals wept in this, the most important British-occupied city of the American War for Independence.

Where to meet: on the steps of the Tweed Courthouse, at 52 Chambers Street, between Broadway and Centre Street. Take the 4,5 train to "Brooklyn Bridge", or the R to "City Hall".

When to meet: 4:45pm for a 5pm start. I will be holding a sign that says "Revolution in New York".

Fee: $15 cash, exact change appreciated!

The tour will be approximately 2/2.5 hours long. While Friendly Native tours walk rain or shine 99.9% of the time, on rare occasions they will be postponed in cases of what can be deemed dangerous weather, and an email sent out to that effect to all who have registered for the event. For sunny days, be sure to bring a hat and a bottle of water. Check the weather reports on the day of the tour; if there is a chance of rain, please bring your own umbrella!

The nearest restrooms to this location are inside St. Paul's Chapel, all the way in the back towards the graveyard on Church Street. There's also a Starbuck's at the base of the Woolworth Building. Please be sure to "take care of things" before the start of the tour!
