A hike for History Lovers! Tumalo Dam Hike and discussion /lunch afterwards

Details

Bend has an amazing and hilarious history of fiascos in bringing water to this high desert. A rogue’s gallery of grifters, chiselers, swindlers, and cheats left hundreds of settlers high and dry. This is a beautiful hike filled with fascinating history! When our wonderful Lynda took me out to see the towering old dam and pretty little Red Rock Canyon behind it, I knew that I just had to share this with you…There are some rocky and potentially slick spots on this trail so please bring good boots, hiking poles, and water for you and your dog for this approximately three mile hike.
BUT THERE IS A PRECONDITION: You need to watch a brief (4:31 minutes) video to learn the history of Tumalo Dam so you can really appreciate the folly and grandness of the original dream. Follow these steps for the video: 1) Google “Central Oregon Daily News Dam Fiasco.” 2) Choose “Central Oregon Daily - The Dam Fiasco @ Bull Flat/Little Did I Know.” 3) Click on the video and then click on “Skip Ad.” 4) Enjoy watching Scott Elnes with one of his enjoyable “Little Did I Know” TV segments. (If you are repeating the hike with the group, the previous history piece was different so watch this one, too.) If you can join us for lunch afterwards, we can discuss more about this interesting history related to water issues past, present, and future.
BECAUSE THIS CANYON IS NARROW, OCCASIONALLY STEEP, AND FRAGILE, WE WILL RESTRICT THIS HIKE TO FEWER PEOPLE AND 6 DOGS, IN ADDITION TO THE DOGS OF THE LEADERS (DOGS HAVE TO BE ON-LEASH FOR PART OF THE HIKE).

IF YOU CAN’T GO, PLEASE UN-RSVP AT LEAST 48 HOURS BEFORE SO THOSE ON THE WAITLIST HAVE TIME TO JOIN. ALWAYS CHECK THE MEETUP SITE PRIOR TO THE HIKE FOR ANY LAST MINUTE CHANGES. THANK YOU!
