The Friends support the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge through conservation on the Refuge and in the community. Our activities complement the work of the federal Fish and Wildlife program by focusing on the work that the federal side of the Refuge can’t do; Fund-Raising, Friend-Raising, and Advocacy.

Grab your paddles and head out on the water to clean up Lake Lowell at Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge! This is a volunteer event day and requires that everyone fills out a Volunteer Service Agreement on the day of the event. Participants under 18 years old will need a parent’s or guardian’s signature. Watercraft equipment is not provided and we ask participants to bring their canoe/kayak, paddles and lifejackets. Basic paddling skills and wearing lifejackets are required. Everyone must follow state regulations on having an Invasive Species Boat sticker on your watercraft.
Agenda: There are two shifts, 10 AM - 12 PM and 1 PM - 3 PM. Please arrive on time.###### Shift 1
- 10 - 10:30 AM: Paperwork, safety briefing, prep for the water
- 10:30 AM - 12 PM: Paddle clean up
###### Shift 2
- 1 - 1:30 PM: Paperwork, safety briefing, prep for the water
- 1:30 - 3 PM: Paddle clean up
Registration Required: We are capping the program at 12 participants for both shifts. Please register to reserve your spot and to select your shift time on this Microsoft Form.
Weather Dependent: This event is dependent on the weather. If it is unsafe to be on the water we will have to cancel. We will notify registered participants and update this page with changes.
What to Bring: Lifejackets, paddles, canoe/kayak, sunscreen, sunglasses, water shoes, hat, water and snacks. We will provide supplies to pick up litter such as bags, gloves, and litter grabbers.
Location: Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, Lower Dam Recreation Area alongside Riverside Drive in Caldwell
Directions from Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center:- Leave the Visitor Center driveway and turn left onto Upper Embankment Rd. heading North.
- Continue straight onto Indiana Ave.
- Turn West on Orchard Ave.
- At the end of Orchard Ave. turn left onto Sunny Slope Rd./Riverside Dr.
- Lower Dam Recreation Area and Lake Lowell Picnic Park are on the left.

¡Tomen sus remos y salgan al agua a limpiar el lago Lowell en el Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Deer Flat! Este es un día de voluntariado y requiere que todos completen un Acuerdo de Servicio Voluntario el día del evento. Los participantes menores de 18 años necesitarán la firma de un padre o tutor. No tenemos equipo para kayak o canoa, así que les pedimos a los participantes que traigan su canoa/kayak, remos y chalecos salvavidas. Se requieren habilidades básicas de remo y el uso de chalecos salvavidas para participar. Todos deben cumplir con las regulaciones estatales y necesitan tener la calcomanía de Embarcación con Especies Invasoras en sus kayak o canoa.

Qué Traer: Chalecos salvavidas, remos, canoa/kayak, protector solar, gafas de sol, zapatos para el agua, sombrero, agua y refrigerios. Tendremos bolsas, guantes y recogedores de basura.

Indicaciones desde el Centro de Visitantes del Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Deer Flat:- Salga de la entrada del Centro de Visitantes y gire a la izquierda en Upper Embankment Rd. en dirección norte.
- Continúe recto por Indiana Ave.
- Gire al oeste (izquierda) en Orchard Ave.
- Al final de Orchard Ave., gire a la izquierda en Sunny Slope Rd./Riverside Dr.
