Elephant and other wildlife trade – whom do we blame?

With

Sharath Babu, R., Honorary Wildlife Warden,

Dhananjay, K.V., Supreme Court Advocate,

Amit Upadhyay, Journalist,

Boraiah, K.T., Assistant Conservator of Forests,

Shashidhara, S.D., Inspector of Police,

As we celebrate this year’s world wildlife day in order to raise awareness

of the world’s wild animals it also is a reminder of the escalating

concerns of illegal wildlife trade of body parts of endangered and other

large mammals such as the elephant. Asian and African elephants that are

killed for ivory, meat and as measure of retaliatory persecution due to

man-animal conflicts feeds into wide-ranging economic, environmental and

social imbalances. Although national and international laws that pose

major restrictions on wildlife crimes; they are hardly followed. The

required amount of protection for animals is not in place. Owing to the

legal loopholes in the system and limited expertise in the field,

exacerbating levels of elephant crimes have been reported in the Indian

sub-continent alone which holds one of the single largest populations of

elephants in the wild. It’s imperative that increased awareness, strict

law enforcement and joint efforts from various stakeholders are brought in

place at a policy level for a strengthened fight against illegal wildlife

trade.
