Paradise Peak (3,917 ft) (aka Peak 1190) is the highest point on Paradise Ridge, the eastern most ridge in the north-south trending Tramp Ridge Complex. This is an excellent route onto a narrow ridge with spectacular views to the north, east, and south that extend into Arizona and Utah.

Join Frank Golden and the Friends of Gold Butte on this adventure. We will meet at the kiosk at 8:00 AM for our introductions and safety brief. Then we will drive 35 miles south on Gold Butte Road to the trail head. Gold Butte Rd is a packed gravel road so most vehicles should make it. However, some sections are rocky and rutted so we recommend driving a high clearance AWD vehicle at a minimum. After the hike, we will convoy back out and expect to reach the kiosk no later than 4:00 PM. Attendees who wish to remain in the monument to explore other areas may do so, but please inform Frank before departing from the group.

The hike is slightly less than 4 miles round trip with an elevation gain of almost 900 feet. The slope is mostly gentle but we will go slow and take numerous breaks to take in the views and catch our breath. There are a few spots where you will need to "high step" over rocks. This is an out and back hike, our turn-around point is the summit. We will stop for lunch at a rocky out cropping a short distance from the summit on the way back. A small portion of the hike will follow a trail created by feral burros. But, the majority of the hike is cross country over limestone bedrock outcroppings and scree fields (small loose stones). Therefore sturdy boots are highly recommended as well as trekking poles. Hikers with knee or hip injuries/issues will find this hike difficult and problematic. There is no shade on the ridge so be sure to bring a wide brim hat, sunglasses, and sun screen. Please dress according in layers to adjust to the conditions. This is a strenuous hike for elevation gain and hiking surface. Attendees are responsible for all your own meals, snacks, and drinks.

Please adhere to social distancing protocol at all times and please do not attend if you're feeling ill or have symptoms. Masks are recommended when in close proximity of others.

If you register for this hike and then aren't able to go, please remove yourself from the "going" list and let one of the organizers know. This will allow someone on the waitlist to be notified and plan to attend. We understand that things come up last minute, but if you do not notify us and just do not show up, you will be tagged as a "no-show" and that could result in your not being permitted to register for future events. It is suggested that you give 48 hours notice if you're not able to attend. We know that's not always possible, especially in the case of illness, but please be courteous and let us know. Please add your phone number when you sign up. If there are changes or updates, Frank will contact you.

Gold Butte National Monument is primitive and has no services of any kind. Event participants must bring and carry their own water, food, sunscreen, basic first-aid items, any medications (e.g., EpiPen or asthma inhalers, etc.) a participant may need, and any other supplies they may want or need while participating in the event. Participants must wear appropriate footwear for the event (for example, for trash-clean-up events, sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots would be appropriate). Participants are strongly encouraged to wear broad-brimmed hats and dress in weather-appropriate clothing when participating outdoors. Participants are reminded to be plant and animal aware at all times. Finally, if the event necessitates, participants are strongly encouraged to provide their medical information (pre-existing conditions, medications, etc.) and their Emergency Contact information (name and phone number) on a card or piece of paper in a sealed envelope with their name on the outside. The volunteer organizer will collect and hold the envelopes during the event and return them, unopened, at the conclusion of the event if they are not needed; and the assumption of risk statement found at In-person Assumption of Risk
