Saturday Workday with the Timbersmiths Group
Details
The Timbersmiths is a workworking group part of the Friends of Pocahontas State Park who work on projects for the park using the park’s woodshop.
While we normally meet every Friday morning, we know that some interested people are not available on weekdays, so we have planned a Saturday event for October 18.
We’ll start at 9:00 a.m. at the park’s woodshop, which is located in the Maintenance area. After the main entrance, continue straight on State Park Road, past the CCC Field/Memorial Garden. You’ll see the park’s Maintenance area on your right. There we’ll have an introduction to the Timbersmiths and the woodshop.
Then we’ll drive out to Third Branch cabin area, at the Swift Creek camps. We will have five different projects available for you to work on, with varying degrees of difficulty:
· Staining the decks of the cabins
· Repairing and staining the firepit benches
· Building turtle nest protectors (wood boxes with wire mesh)
· Making wooden Christmas tree ornaments
· Fixing and raising the steps to the cabin decks
· Building benches for the inside of the cabins
Some of these projects are not difficult, so don’t worry if your skills are beginner-level. You can work with your child on a project if you wish. Other projects need a little experience.
There will be a Timbersmiths volunteer at each station to help you out. Lumber and tools will be provided (bring gloves if you wish). Please wear closed-toe shoes.
At noon, we’ll finish up and enjoy a barbecue of hot dogs, hamburgers, and soft drinks. We look forward to seeing you on October 18.
