Returning for 2026 — Volunteer Training Series: Avenza Maps

By popular demand, our Volunteer Training Series is back for 2026! This year, we’re expanding opportunities by offering weekday evening and weekend morning sessions—be sure to check the schedule for dates and times that work best for you.

With so many digital mapping apps available today, you might be surprised to learn that Pocahontas State Park uses Avenza Maps. Virginia State Parks provides GeoPDF maps for all its parks, and volunteers can download Avenza for free to access these maps.
Avenza is more than just a navigation tool. It allows you to:

  • Share your location
  • Report trail hazards
  • Collect field data for citizen science projects

This training series offers short, hands-on courses at the Basic, Intermediate levels.

### First Course: Basic Avenza Training

This introductory course is designed for both iOS and Android users and will cover:

  • App installation
