Join the Friends of Rose Creek and our partners at San Diego Bird Alliance as we document the King Tides in the Rose Creek Salt Marsh and Estuary adjacent to Mission Bay High and Barnard Elementary Schools.

Bring your app enabled device and we’ll help you get set up to be a community scientist helping to project what sea level rise in our community will look like. Today’s tide is projected to be a 7’4″ tide which is high at or shortly after 8:20 AM.

The full moon takes place at 2:02 AM on January 3rd so the full force of gravitational pull is in play.

Use your smart phone or digital camera to participate in the Project by taking and uploading photos of king tides through the King Tides Photo Upload form. Start by choosing where you’ll go to take your photos and then look at the tide map below to find out what time and how high your king tides will be. Take your photos as near to high tide time as you can. Your photos will be displayed on an interactive map. (If you’d like to share a video clip of king tides with us, please email kingtides@coastal.ca.gov for instructions.)

The antithesis of the King Tides is the extreme low tide which takes place today at 3:38 PM Pacific time with a negative 1.8 – 2.1 foot tide.

Rose Creek and the Kendall-Frost Marsh are star-crossed lovers. Rose Creek is trying desperately to reconnect and its arc towards Kendall-Frost is most visible at the extreme low tide. Plus the shore birds will be out in force.

Join us as we walk to the mouth of Rose Creek to experience nature trying to heal herself!

We will be walking along an wheelchair accessible asphalt path from the Mike Gotch Bridge to the mouth of Rose Creek.

Why you ask? A salt marsh relies on the fresh water, sedimentation, and nutrients, that the creek provides during storm events.

Are you looking for more nature for the New Year? Maybe burn off a few of those holiday calories?

The Tecolote Canyon Interpretive Group will be leading a nature hike in Marian Bear Park from the Lehrer Drive entrance. The trail starts on the top of Clairemont Mesa, and we'll discover native plants and animals of the mesa top. Heading down the Kroc Trail we enter a coastal sage scrub environment, then down through some large coastal live oaks to the base of the canyon. We'll then hike east along the San Clemente Canyon Trail and observe a variety of plants and animals.

NOTE: The Kroc trail descends fairly steeply, dropping ~200 ft to the canyon floor. Some may want hiking poles on the steeper stretches. The trail is well maintained and easy to hike, but a good aerobic workout on the return trip out of the canyon.
Binoculars and good walking shoes are recommended.

Note: There are no facilities at this location.

Directions: Off of Clairemont Mesa Blvd (east of Genesee Avenue), turn north on Diane Avenue (there is a Starbucks at the corner). Drive 0.3 miles north on Diane till you reach a 4-way stop with yellow striped crosswalks. Turn right on Lehrer Drive and continue 0.2 miles till you reach the end of the road. Parking is available along the street.
