Annual non wilderness spring maintenance trip #1 on the Border Route Trail (a unit of the National Park Service's North Country National Scenic Trail) on May 3-May 5, 2024. This trip will focus on the non-wilderness west 17 mile section near GunFlint Lake.

We will hike with daypack and tools which include handsaws, lobbers, chain saws (must be NPS or USFS Sawyer certified) and brush cutters to clear the trail of winter deadfalls and brush.

The Border Route Trail is a rugged wilderness trail on the Canadian border. The weather can and probably will be cool and/or wet early in May . There will be lots of hiking on the Border Route Trail, expect 5 miles a day with your daypack and equipment.

Lodging accommodations will involve car camping (tent) possibly along the Cross River or a USFS campground if open. Details will be provided as the event nears. The trip starts at 8:30 am Friday morning which means participants arrive the night before or drive up the morning of depending on where you are coming from.

As an added bonus, we will install the new North Country National Scenic Trail signage along the BRT from the Gunflint trail to Bridal Falls and the entrance to the BWCA portion of the BRT.

Breakfast on Saturday and Sunday plus dinner on Friday and Saturday is included (two breakfasts, two dinners). Lunch and snacks are on your own. Be prepared for cool evenings and moderate day work conditions near the Canadian border.

There is a $25 deposit.
