Details
The Welaka National Fish Hatchery is a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service facility located in Welaka, Florida. It is a scenic and ecologically rich site. It was established in 1937 and has long played an important role in the restoration and management of native freshwater fish species, with a special focus on striped bass and Gulf sturgeon. We will be privileged to a tour of the hatchery grounds and aquarium building by a member of the staff, where we will observe various native Florida fish up close. If time permits, we may walk a nature trail that winds through a mix of upland habitat and river floodplain, offering excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, including wading birds, songbirds, and native plants. This event will be limited to 15 people, and you must register to attend. Driving distance from the Daytona Beach area and the Maitland area averages 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours. This is well worth the drive!! We will start promptly at 10:00 am, you may want to arrive 15 minutes early. The event will end at approximately 12 noon. There are a few restaurants in the area, such as Shrimp R Us & More, 765 3rd Ave, Welaka, FL 32193
