Bluebird Box Cleanup/Installation

Details

“The Friends of Myles Standish State Forest (MSSF) Native Bird Support Group is helping bluebirds by providing them with nesting boxes in several locations in the forest. Their populations have risen in recent years due to nesting boxes!”

We are inviting you to help clean out and put up Eastern bluebird nesting boxes for the MSSF in the Wildlife Management Area at Cutter Fields and around headquarters.

Meet at the MSSF Headquarters picnic tables at 10:00 AM, Saturday, March 18th. After we clean the boxes, we will carpool to Cutter Field RD to put the boxes up.

Volunteers are needed to help monitor Eastern bluebird boxes for the season as well. It's pretty simple. All you have to do is visit the boxes assigned to you on a weekly basis and keep track of any nesting activity. If you'd like to learn how to monitor bluebird nests, send an email to madshamel@gmail.com . We will be holding a monitoring training meeting in April and will post it on this site.

Please bring a Phillips head screwdriver and gloves if you have some. Also, don't wear good clothes, as we might get a little dirty. If it's raining heavily, we will reschedule this to be Sunday March 19th, 2017 at 9:00 am.

If you can't make this meeting, you can help native birds by setting up a bird house in your own yard. Visit the Mass Audubon website to learn more about birds and for instructions on building bird boxes for different kinds of birds.
