Saturn and Jupiter Astronomy Night at Myles Standish SF

Join us for a night of sky viewing in the forest. With one of the darker locations in MSSF, this is a great place to view the planets and constellations. This will be led by Jim Kundzicz, a local astronomy enthusiast who will share his sky observing experience with anyone interested. We encourage participants to bring family members.

Jim's comments: June 15th is a good night:

Saturn For much of 2017, the planet Saturn will shine at its brightest since 2002. This is because its beautiful rings, which contribute greatly to its ability to be seen with the naked eye, will be "wide open," with Saturn's northern hemisphere tipped in our direction. In fact, the planet won't look this good again until at least 2030. The ringed planet will be at its brightest in the evening sky on June 15, when it makes its closest approach to Earth.

Jupiter is also visible all evening. There are several deep sky objects out, we’ll find what can depending on how clear and dark it is this evening. I may bring both the big binoculars and the telescope. If so, I would set the telescope to Jupiter early on and keep there – it will track Jupiter on its own. Then, later I’d move it to Saturn – and keep it there, tracking as it moves..

I’d use the big binoculars to search for other Objects as the night progresses.
