Summer Star Gazing and Perseid Meteor Shower Night

Details

Join us for a night of sky viewing in the forest. With one of the darker locations in MSSF, this is a great place to view the planets and constellations. This will be led by Jim Kundzicz, a local astronomy enthusiast who will share his sky observing experience with anyone interested. We encourage participants to bring family members.

Jim's comments:

The sun will set around 7:50pm. Soon thereafter we will look for Saturn, which is a bit low but may be visible from our location. We may even find Jupiter before it sets. The moon doesn’t rise until 9:35PM, and won’t be higher in the sky until 10PM or so. The hope is it will be dark enough before the moon rise to see some of the Perseid Meteors. The Perseid meteor shower, one of the brighter meteor showers of the year, occurs every year between July 17 and August 24. The shower tends to peak around August 9-13. There are many other Stars, Constellations, and Deep Sky Objects to look for this time of year. And then the moon will arise for us, and be quite large..
