Geminid Meteor Shower Night

Details

Join us for a winter night of sky viewing in the forest. With one of the darker locations in MSSF, this is a great place to view the planets and constellations. This will be led by Jim Kundzicz, a local astronomy enthusiast who will share his sky observing experience with anyone interested. We encourage participants to bring family members.

Jim's comments: The Geminid Meteor Shower is sometimes referred to as the king of all meteor showers and will peak on the night of December 13th. This year paints a different picture with the peak of the shower falling just a few days before the new moon, which will create a dark backdrop. We won't have to contend with light from the moon, but also won’t have the moon to view this time.

Dress warm (think winter warm), bring a chair. While looking for meteors, we’ll also be looking for the Andromeda Galaxy, the Orion Nebula, the Pleiades and Double Star Clusters, along with several Winter Constellations.

Also, the International Space Station will make two passes early tonight : First at 4:41pm and the second at 6:17pm – amazing how quickly it circles the Earth. It will be low, and we may have trees in the way, but we’ll be looking for it.
