Upper Cheeseman Reservoir Trail and lunch at Zoka's in Pine Grove

Details

I'm sharing one of my favorite hikes! The Cheesman Reservoir is a water source for the City of Denver and has many of the features of a hydroelectric dam minus the power turbines and switchyard.

This will be an in and out MODERATE hike. There is some elevation gain at the start of the hike with several switch backs and the trail will level out on top. The end of the hike will be several rock stairs and may not be suitable for small dogs (unless you don't mind carrying them!).

The roads here are maintained by the Denver Water District (the dam owner/operators) and the Flying J ranch.

There's also some great fishing at the outflow of the dam. From All Trails: Upper Chessman Canyon Trail is a 4.1 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Sedalia, Colorado that features a lake and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. We do live in Colorado so be prepared for the weather! Wear layers, bring water and snacks. Hiking poles are recommended but optional.

If you're coming from the Pine Junction direction go past the parking area off CR 126/Decker Rd about 100 yds. and take the dirt road on the right. Keep left and you'll end up at the correct parking area.
