Workshop: Let’s Build Our Christmas Meetup App!
Details
Join us November 12th at Solea to embark on our quest to make the coolest, zaniest multiplayer retro tool… of all time. 🤯🤩🫣
This November, we’re getting together to build shared, silly experiences: collaborative mini-games, hidden Easter eggs, festive surprises, and whatever else we come up with together.
Wait, what is this even about…?!
Frontiers Bergen has a tradition of organizing an annual Julebord in December where we enjoy ✨ fancy party food ✨ and reflect on the past year together with a retrospective. To our great disappointment, the retro tool we’ve used for the past two years debounces emoji reactions. Participants could hammer the buttons with their enthusiasm, but only a few emojis would count. We felt cheated. So some of us did the only reasonable thing… and built our own, better app. Because every button smash deserves to count. ❤️😆💩👍 (Escaping PowerPoint before it could claim the rest of our souls was a welcome bonus.)
We’re now adding the needed app functionality for the retrospective. You’re welcome to help with those core features too, but we can finish the essentials outside the workshop.
So what’s happening at the November meetup?
This evening is about experimenting, learning from each other, and making things that make us laugh. Bring an idea, find someone to build with, and have fun! You can choose if you want to use AI coding tools or not. 😊
The app is built with raw html, css, Javascript, Go, templ and Datastar. Gerhard will kick things off with a demo and a walkthrough of the codebase before we pair up or work in small groups.
Whether you’re an experienced developer or still finding your feet, you’re welcome! Contribute code, help with the interface, test things out, or join someone else’s idea. You don’t need to know the codebase beforehand. 🧘♀️
And as usual, there will be food, drink and merriment! 🍻
