The Talks

Auditing your front-end for performance and scalability

In this talk James will walk you through the importance of performance on the web, tools to audit your front-end for performance, give you tips on how to fix it all, then bringing it all back together for how to keep it that way so you can always scale.

If You're Reading .then() It's Too Late

First there were callbacks, then there were Promises and soon there will be async/await. The JavaScript community has made great strides in wrangling async behavior, but what if I told you that using Promises in your application logic necessarily makes your code harder to test by introducing effects? In this talk I'll demonstrate that including async primitives like callbacks and Promises in application logic implies that a side-effect has already occurred and that it's too late for that logic to be tested without any setup. I'll also demonstrate how to use existing libraries and language features to describe effects as pure data, making logic around outside interactions testable without a network, database, or any other environment.

About Luke

I'm a JavaScript developer at Raise working on the consumer-facing product and UI infrastructure. I love my home in Chicago, and when I'm not thinking about managing side-effects in JavaScript or maintaining open source JavaScript and Elm projects, I like to play the guitar, attempt to speed-run Metroid Fusion, and spend time sitting around with my girlfriend and friends.

RUST

Rust is a systems language pursuing the trifecta: safety, concurrency, and speed. It has come onto the stage from a rocky pre-1.0 era and is now ready to shine. The language has already started to show its power with the Mozilla Servo web browser engine. The goal is for you to walk away with a better understanding of the problems Rust is trying to solve and to get you thinking of where you may want to use it.

About John

John Downey is the Security Lead at Braintree. Braintree helps businesses accept credit card payments online with great development tools and first class support. There he has worked on their highly available infrastructure and integrations into the banking system. In his free time he contributes to open source projects and mentors high school students in the FIRST Robotics Competition.
