In Plato's Allegory of the Cave, prisoners are chained inside a dark cave, only able to see shadows cast on the wall from objects behind them, which they believe to be reality. One prisoner escapes, sees the outside world and the true source of the shadows—the sun—and realizes the deeper truth. When he returns to enlighten the others, they reject him, preferring the familiar illusions.
Does Plato's cave serve as a good analogy for social media? People could mistake the images they seen on their phones as reality. What is needed to see reality of events as it is? Join us for a philosophical discussion on social media as we drink and dine in Green Cheek Co in Orange.
