What does it mean to be a citizen of the world? The notion of cosmopolitanism originated in ancient Greece by the Cynics and was expanded upon in Rome by the Stoics. For the Stoics, being a citizen of the world consisted in adopting a philosophy that guide one's thoughts and actions. According to modern Stoic, Massimo Pigliucci, cosmopolitanism dissolves the dichotomy between altruistically and selfishly in living ethically.
