Data is the new oil. Or is it the new electricity? Is data scientist the sexiest job of the 21st century?

While there’s plenty of hype about data and associated jobs, the reality is that companies and technical professionals need to become much more savvy about the massive amounts of data available today. But what does this mean? What are the roles available if you want to transition into a data focused role? How would you go about doing it? This Full Stack session will feature a panel of local professionals who have made that transition. Come to learn about the steps they took to a data focused role as well as what they and their teams do to leverage data in their companies.

David Froslie

After nearly 20 years at Microsoft, David now splits his time between leading the Capstone program for the NDSU Computer Science department and helping organizations maximize their return on their analytics investments through AI architecture, strategy, and training at Lake Data Insights. He recently completed an MS in Data Science through the University of Wisconsin to go with an MBA from the University of St. Thomas and an engineering undergraduate degree from NDSU.

Howard Fulks

Information Architect and Data Scientist with a passion for analytics development. Howard spent nearly 25 years at Microsoft as a business intelligence developer and architect, culminating in an MBA in Business Intelligence from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. He left Microsoft to join

Intelligent InSites as Enterprise Architect and then joined R.D. Offutt as a Data Scientist, tasked to create a multi-discipline team as Director of Analytics.

Heather Jarski

Heather started her career as an analytical chemist in the sugar industry and grew into a process engineering role during her 16 years there. She then made the leap to John Deere and electronics 10 years ago, first managing the electronics analysis laboratory and then advanced technology analytics and Industry 4.0 proof of concept projects. She now manages the Data Science and Analytics team in Fargo and is responsible for the strategic business management of the ERP, MES, and PLM digital products at John Deere’s electronics manufacturing facilities in Fargo, ND, Torreon, Mexico, and Lonikand, India. Heather holds a B.S. in Chemistry from MSUM and an MBA and Graduate Certificate in Statistics, both from NDSU.

Fred Riggins
Professor of Management Information Systems- North Dakota State University

Dr. Riggins is the Director of the Center for Enterprise Business Analytics and the Director of the Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) program in the College of Business at NDSU. He earned his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University and has published over fifty journal and conference papers with over 5,400 citations. His work is considered foundational in several areas including trading partner incentives for developing interorganizational systems, the use of information and communications technology in microfinance, management reactions to the digital divide, and business issues related to the use of RFID and the Internet of Things.

Youngun You
Younggun graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from Hanyang University in Seoul, Korea. He started work at Doosan in 2006 within the service department. Since joining, he has experienced many different roles including sales, marketing, product management, and strategy. In 2014 he relocated to the US as a project manager focusing on sales and marketing initiatives. Throughout his time with Bobcat, he has developed a passion for data and analytics. He is currently Director of Data Science, focused on developing internal capabilities and driving key organizational initiatives.
