Dear members,

This month we're hosting the very last Full Stack Ghent meetup. It's been a wild ride and want to thank you all for being a part of it: https://twitter.com/fullstackbe/status/1653296599940886528

We're visiting the offices of Teamleader. They're so nice to provide us with food and drinks for the evening!

Dietrich will give his talk "ADHDeveloper – Thriving as a neurodivergent software engineer". Unfortunately Freek had to cancel so Bramus will speak about "Scroll-Driven Animations with CSS".

We hope to see you soon,

Dries, Rias & Freek

TALKS

ADHDeveloper – Thriving as a neurodivergent software engineer by Dietrich Moerman

Dietrich tells a personal tale of being a former software engineer with ADHD, what he learned as a tech team lead, and how he could apply the same techniques in his personal life.

With this 45-minute keynote, people become more aware of their neurodivergent colleagues, how they may have personal struggles, and what can help them and the team overcome this. Introducing five guiding principles for successful software teams, Dietrich shares practices and tips that help both teams as well as neurodivergent team members to become more resilient and productive.

Speaker: When his family bought an LCD screen-fitted typewriter in 1992, Dietrich (he/him) fell in love with computers and electronics. He developed free software to create online communities while still in high school in the early 2000s. After graduating in software engineering, he started working as a developer, growing into roles such as development team lead, project manager, analyst, ScrumMaster and consultant.

With a late diagnosis of ADHD and ASD (autism), Dietrich gradually discovered the strengths and challenges of being neurodivergent. He created a keynote in 2021 outlining the curious similarities between software teams and ADHD and how some principles can make life better for both.

Today he focuses on making companies and workplaces more neuroinclusive, putting his own experiences and learnings into practice and guiding leaders, HR professionals and teams to thrive with neurodiversity. In his free time, he organises Breaking the Silos with events on innovation and collaboration in the Belgian tech industry, and plays improvisational theatre.

Scroll-Driven Animations with CSS by Bramus

A new and upcoming addition to the Web Platform are Scroll-Driven Animations. With it, you can control the playback of an animation through scrolling. This means that as you scroll up and down, the linked animation will move forward or backward. This can either be based on the scroll offset of a scroll container (ScrollTimeline) or on the relative position of an element within its scroll container (ViewTimeline).

By dissecting a bunch of demos and tools, this talk practically approaches the features this spec has to offer, teaching you all the intricacies of ScrollTimeline and ViewTimeline along the way.

Note: while the APIs defined in the Scroll-Driven Animations specification work in conjunction with the existing Web Animations API (WAAPI) and CSS Animations API, this talk will mainly focus on the CSS aspect.

Speaker: Bramus Van Damme is a web developer from Belgium. From the moment he discovered view-source at the age of 14 (way back in 1997), he fell in love with the web and has been tinkering with it ever since.
As a Chrome Developer Relations Engineer at Google, he spreads the word on CSS, UI, and DevTools. Before joining Google, Bramus worked as a freelance developer in various front- and backend roles. For seven years he also was a College Lecturer Web & Mobile, educating undergrad students all about HTML, CSS, and JavaScript — in that order.
