BEGINNERS: This clinic is designed for beginners (NTRP 1.0-2.0). An NTRP Rating is a numerical indicator of tennis-playing ability, from 1.0 (beginner) through 7.0 (touring pro). For example, a player with a 1.5 NTRP rating has limited experience with stroke development, still working on getting the ball into play and is not yet ready to compete. By contrast, a 3.0 player is consistent when hitting medium-paced shots but is not comfortable with all strokes and lacks execution.

INSTRUCTOR: Matt Richter is your instructor. A NTRP rated 5.0 player, Matt has been playing tennis for 20 years and coaching for 10 years. He is a PTR certified to teach all ages and for performance development of advanced players as well. Previously, he served as head tennis instructor at Starclaire Recreation Club.

LESSONS: The clinic goes over the basic mechanics and fundamentals of tennis. In class, we will learn to play forehand, backhand, and serve over a set of 3-4 classes. We will discuss and practice how to hit the ball with proper technique, learn how to score and the different parts of the court. We will finish with a game at the end of class. Attention will be given to individual players so everyone can improve on their skills and gain confidence.

COURTESY: Please be polite towards each other on court. Harassment or aggression is not allowed in the clinic or in this group. We are here to learn and have a good time.

PAYMENT: Group lesson size is restricted to 3-8 players with the total pay capped around $50. The pay scale is as follows: 3 players $15 per person; 4 players $12 each; 5 players $10 each; 6 players $8 each; 7 players $7 each; 8 players $6 each. The more players there are for each clinic, the less costly it is for each player. In comparison, Charlotte City Tennis’s private group lessons vary from $25 to $45 per person per hour with an individual private lesson priced at $75 per hour ([https://www.charlottecitytennis.com/private-small-group-lessons/)](https://www.charlottecitytennis.com/private-small-group-lessons/) Accepted payment methods include cash, PayPal and Venmo. Payment will be made at the start of each class on court. Please arrive 5-10 minutes earlier to handle payment and warm up for the clinic.

RSVP & NO-SHOW: Please RSVP ahead of time so we can get a good head count and how much each player will pay. The cut-off time for RSVP is the day before the clinic at 6PM. If you cannot make it, please change your RSVP so others on the “Waitlist” can join. “No show” (i.e. RSVP to an event without showing up) will be recorded. Two “no-shows” to a clinic will prevent the player from joining the clinic in the future. Three “no shows” to group events, the player will be removed from the group. We try our best to encourage sportsmanship as well as responsibility and care for fellow players.

LOGISTICS: Players are expected to bring their own racquet to the clinic. Here is a video on how to pick a racket that suits you. Coach Matt will bring tennis balls to the practice, but players are welcome to bring their own tennis balls to the court as backups. A public bathroom is available at the tennis courts for changing clothes etc. Cancellation may be made due to weather (e.g. rain). Coach Matt will inform players 1 hour prior in the case of inclement weather.

COURTS: We will use Park Rd Park courts during times when they are less occupied on the weekend. These free courts are FIRST-COME-FIRST-SERVED. We’d move to another court in the rare case of tennis tournaments. Coach Matt will be there 10-15 minutes before start time to secure courts.

PARKING: The address is “6215 Park Rd, Charlotte, NC 28210” or search “Park Road Tennis Court”. You can also click on the Google Map on this page and follow the directions from there. Park Rd Park has two sections. The tennis court is on the other side of Park Rd from the main park. If you drive down from north to south on Park Rd, the tennis courts would be on the left-hand side (East).

We are here to play tennis, have fun and build a community atmosphere that is friendly, respectful, and social for all!
