PA Abandoned Turnpike (with C&O/Western MD Rail Trail option) some details TBD

The main event is to ride the iconic Abandoned PA Turnpike! The tentative plan is to meet at 11am, MONDAY to ride out and back. This ride will be about 20 miles, possibly a bit more if we decide to ride beyond the pike. We will take our time, enjoying the various features along this abandoned road.

ADDITIONAL OPTION for RIDING BEFORE THAT:
We can also meet up SUNDAY in the afternoon/early evening to ride some of the C&O/Western Maryland Rail Trail. Monday morning, we might also have time for trail riding before heading to the Abandoned Turnpike.

These plans will be firmed up as people sign up!

If coming on Sunday and staying overnight, I recommend staying at the Holiday Inn Express, in Clear Spring, MD. It is near the C&O and WMRT. (I will be coming from the bike weekend in Gettysburg but you could arrive earlier and ride in that area more. This is the Four Locks area of the C&O. The WMRT starts at Big Pool and heads west, parallel to the C&O. Clear Spring is 1 hour from the Abandoned Turnpike.

Bring water, snacks, a GOOD HEAD LIGHT FOR THE TUNNELS on the Turnpike, and what you need to repair a flat. The turnpike surface is quite degraded and race type tires are NOT recommended. A gravel, mountain, hybrid type bike is a good choice for this ride.
