WebAssembly on the BEAM: Building erlang_wasm in Erlang
`erlang_wasm` is a WebAssembly runtime implemented directly in Erlang/OTP, without Wasmtime, Wasmer or another native runtime underneath.

This talk will look at why building a Wasm runtime on the BEAM leads to some unusual design choices, how hot WebAssembly code is compiled to Core Erlang and loaded as BEAM modules, and how Erlang processes naturally provide isolation, supervision and timeouts around untrusted code.

I will also cover some of the practical use cases I see for it: sandboxed plugins, user-defined logic, portable extensions and embedding other runtimes inside Erlang systems.

The project has also been developed with extensive use of AI coding agents, so I will briefly discuss what worked, what did not, and how testing, conformance and benchmarks were used to keep the process under control.

Benoît Chesneau is a software craftsmann living near Paris. He has years of experience in building small and big-scale database backend websites. He is the founder of Enki Multimedia building innovative P2P data platforms and open-source applications. Benoît Chesneau is also the founder of the Refuge and Barrel projects, the author of Gunicorn and multiple other opensource projects in Python and Erlang.
