Volunteer Build Help Build Houses with Renew Community *Can't be late*

Details

This is a VOLUNTEER EVENT where we'll be helping to build houses for Renew Communities in North Chicago. I have a friend who works here, so I wanted to SUPPORT them. Here's some IMPORTANT information about where we'll be building in North Chicago:

  • You MUST BRING water, CLOSED-TOE SHOES such as a boot, or something that is best for outdoor work.
  • Wear clothes that you don't mind getting DIRTY or getting PAINT on.

If you need to log VOLUNTEER HOURS for something, you can be SIGNED OFF on this, or just for fun—and it's a great opportunity for us to do something GREAT TOGETHER.
This activity is FREE. I RECOMMEND that you bring some snacks, PLENTY OF WATER, and SUNSCREEN.

  • EVERYONE will need to SIGN A WAIVER. I'm going to post it in WhatsApp closer to the date, but they will have some PAPER COPIES available. I can also EMAIL it to anyone if they give me their EMAIL ADDRESS.

If you SIGN UP, please COMMIT TO COMING because they will be expecting us. Please also plan for APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS and PLEASE DON'T BE LATE because they're going to go over what we will be working on at the BEGINNING.
If anybody wants to CARPOOL let me know. I will provide an EXACT ADDRESS closer to the date, but we will be working in NORTH CHICAGO.

The community described is comprised of about 33,000 people, including the Great Lakes Naval Community. It has deep religious commitments, potential, and significant needs.
North Chicago is identified as a food desert, lacking a grocery store, and there are efforts to improve the business environment, community, and school system.
There has been a focus on improvement and revitalization, with the school system and city leadership making strides in ACT scores, graduation rates, lower truancy rates, and supporting families.
The unemployment rate is fluctuating at 17%, with a median household income of $43,499.00.
Homeownership in North Chicago is at 33%, which is lower than in Lake Bluff, IL, where 91% own their home.

ABOUT:
In 2013, ReNew Communities took the next step and launched two key initiatives:

  • A Business Development and Jobs program. This consists of a team of business professionals who volunteer their time to network with and provide consulting to local businesses that desire help in identifying and solving business issues. The Business Development team also works closely with North Chicago city staff, the Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and the local high school to help grow businesses, develop career pathways and internships for students and create other job opportunities in the community.
  • Matthew Homes program. This is an affordable housing program for low and middle income families in need of housing. Matthew Homes are clustered near each other, so families have an opportunity to know and help each other, and nurture community relationships.
