During the first part of this Meetup Hilton will discuss their Hadoop Journey.

Then, Josh Elser, Apache Calcite committer and Apache Phoenix contributor, will introduce Apache Calcite. Calcite is a relatively silent powerhouse project in the Apache Software Foundation. It has been slowly becoming a foundational component for numerous other Apache projects, both new and old, such as Hive, Phoenix, Drill, Kylin, Flink, Samza and more!

This talk will give an general overview to Apache Calcite, explaining why the relational algebra foundation that Calcite provides is so important and powerful. It will also cover the long term goals of centralizing many SQL implementations on Calcite and the benefits that this provides. Relational algebra and relational database expertise not required!
