Wine & Design: Design <3 Data

Details

What is possible from design perspective by utilising data, machine learning and AI?

During the meetup we will look into why data and machine learning can make products and services better and we will go through examples of design patterns relevant to such applications. We have three fantastic designers talking about empathy, data and what can we do with all the information in hand.

Please join us for some networking with snacks and wine (other beverages available too) starting 6:30pm. The program will start at 7:00pm.

Talk title: When data screws you: how should we combine design, technology and empathy?

Summary: We are seeing so many companies become "data-driven companies", utilising data to provide better and more relevant services to their users.

But what happens when technology does the opposite, frustrating users and damaging companies reputation?

About Pete Dalton

Pete has a BA in Industrial Design and is an interaction designer with 8 years experience. He built the iconic ‘Rain Room’ for Random International and had creative responsibility for the Barclays ‘Rise’ Incubators during his time as Design Principal. At Normally he was a core member of the Nokia Digital Health project and is currently running projects for Jaguar Land Rover and a financial startup Yofi.

Talk Title: Taking back control of your financial data

Summary: With a major upheaval of the current payments system (PSD2) about to launch, a whole host of opportunities to better utilise financial data are emerging. Specifically looking at financial inclusion for teenagers and people with learning difficulties, Normally have been experimenting with Monzo Bank's developer API to expose new contexts for this group's financial data. Aiming to improve understanding and help them gain financial independence.

About Tom Scott

Tom Scott is designer and technologist with 18 years experience both hands-on, and building and running design teams. In his current role, he leads a small team of researchers, designers and technologists helping Tesco solve broader strategic questions about its digital shopping experience.

For six years, he founded and ran Clerkenwell based digital design and development agency, Talking Pixels. He’s worked for clients across a range of sectors, including Carphone Warehouse, Geek Squad, Seedrs, Institute for European Environmental Policy, Topshop, Sony, Unicef, Deloitte, and WorldPay.

Talk title: Can humanity survive (im)personal data?

Summary: Will the increasing ubiquity of personal data collection and viability of AI lead to a future where mass social engineering through automated emotional manipulation is inevitable? Or could our response to these dangers become the catalyst for a real utopia? A talk designed to provoke thought and debate about our role as digital architects and the future we want to create.
