What we’re about

This Meetup group will give humanists and like-minded atheists, agnostics, and free thinkers in the Gainesville, Fl, community a place to meet, interact with each other, and promote and deepen their secular values.

As a local group, we can help members avert the adverse emotional and physical effects of social isolation by providing them with an opportunity to interact with like-minded and supportive friends.

As a group, we can also be more effective than individuals in educating the public about the humanist alternative to religious philosophies.

As a group, we can help members grow in their understanding and appreciation of humanism, so they are able to more effectively and joyfully put the humanist philosophy into practice in their daily lives.

And finally, as a group, we can work with other organizations – including religious ones – in areas where they have common concerns. Some problems are not religious in origin and affect freethinkers and religionists alike. Many of the problems can be addressed more effectively by collective action.

Isaac Asimov, the prolific writer and late president of the American Humanist Association: "We owe it to ourselves as respectable human beings to do what we can to make humanity rational. And having done this – or having tried to do this – we can respect ourselves.”

[Some of the above comes from the American Humanist Association's web pages]
