THE OTHER SIDE STORY, Hilarious one-man musical

Come laugh out loud with the DC premiere of The Other Side Story, written and performed by Puerto Rican artist Ángel Vázquez, a hilarious one-man musical that explores the island’s history, the Puerto Rican migration to the continental United States that began in the late 19th century, and debunks preconceived ideas about Nuyoricans.

Directed by Ernesto Concepción, the show follows Sixto, a young man who arrives in New York City in 2020 with his own ideas about Puerto Rican identity—only to uncover the untold stories of the community’s vibrant past. The Other Side Story reimagines the Puerto Rican experience in New York with bold humor and soulful storytelling that will resonate with audiences.

The play invites audiences to reflect on heritage, belonging, and the power of storytelling to reclaim one’s cultural identity. It's a rare chance to experience a fresh, funny, and deeply human perspective on finding home between two worlds.

“The importance of performing The Other Side Story in front of diverse audiences- Boricuas, Latinos, and North Americans- is much more than to offer a theater experience, it is to stimulate a cultural dialogue long overdue,” states Vázquez. “To perform this play today…for you, in a time of censorship, xenophobia, and erosion of our education system, is an act of resistance. It is telling the world, through art, ‘We are here, we exist, and we tell our own stories.”

Ven a reír a carcajadas con el estreno en DC de The Other Side Story, escrito y actuado por artista puertorriqueño Ángel Vázquez, un unipersonal cómico musical que explora la historia de la isla, la migración boricua a Estados Unidos continental que comenzó a finales del siglo XIX y desmonta ideas preconcebidas sobre los Nuyoricans.

Dirigido por Ernesto Concepción, el espectáculo sigue a Sixto, un joven que llega a la ciudad de Nueva York en el 2020 con sus propias ideas sobre la identidad puertorriqueña y descubre historias desconocidas sobre el vibrante pasado de la comunidad. The Other Side Story recrea la experiencia Boricua en Nueva York, mediante una narración llena de sentimiento y humor que toca al público profundamente.

Con astucia, ritmo y emoción, la pieza invita al público a reflexionar sobre la herencia, la pertenencia y el poder de contar historias para reclamar la identidad propia. Es una excelente oportunidad de conocer una perspectiva humana, divertida y fresca sobre lo que significa encontrar un hogar en medio de dos mundos.

Según Vázquez, “el significado de representar The Other Side Story ante públicos diversos --boricuas, latinoamericanos y norteamericanos-- es mucho más que una función teatral: es un diálogo cultural necesario. Representar esta obra hoy, en un tiempo de censura, xenofobia y erosión educativa, es un acto de resistencia y educación. Es decirle al mundo, desde el arte: ‘Estamos aquí, existimos, pensamos y contamos nuestras propias historias”.
