Red Rocks Seal Hike Adventure

Details

Hello adventure lovers in Wellington. This month we’re braving the elements to visit some fur seals braving the elements too. That’s right: we’re heading to Red Rocks!

  • Activity: We’re going to focus on hiking and a bit of wildlife watching. We’ll be taking a long and relaxing walk along the SW coast of Wellington to spot a bachelor male fur seal colony. We’ll stop for a picnic along the way too. We can also make a side trip to see the WWII bunkers, if people are keen.
  • Start Time: Sunday 24 August 2025 at 1pm. We’ll wait around for 15 minutes before starting walking. If you’re running late, message on the adventure channel on Discord so that we can either wait before we leave or let you know how far along we are. You can try walking fast to catch us up or meet us as we’re coming back.
  • Start Location: Te Kopahou Visitor Centre, Ōwhiro Bay, Wellington 6023. We’ll meet near the start of the track at the western end of the car park.
  • If coming by public transport: You can catch bus number 1 to Island Bay and get off at the last stop and walk around the coast via the Bach Cafe and Owhiro Bay Parade. This adds a 2 kilometre walk before the start of the walkway.
  • Minimum Cost: $0
  • Physical considerations: This is a long, even walk. It’s 7.4km out and back. The trail is majority flat, but with moving stones underneath. Once we start walking, the only way to leave is to walk back the way we came. If you find you can’t make it to the end, you can either return on your own, or wait for us to finish the end of the walk and come back past you. Note: On Sundays the road is closed to traffic.
  • Duration: It takes about 2-3 hours to do the walk. We’ll stop for a picnic at some point along the route. If you need to leave early, you’d need to turn around early.
  • What to bring: Comfortable hiking/walking shoes , appropriate clothing (including raincoat/windbreaker), your own drinks/water, some food for yourself and/or something to share that we will eat along the route. If you have binoculars and a big camera, bring them to enhance the wildlife watching.
  • Who's welcome: any person at least partly associated with the games industry and as many of their family/friends that would also like to join. Children welcome. Dogs are not allowed on the walk due to the seals.
  • Contingency plan: If the weather is super bad, we’ll reschedule for a different day. But it would have to be very bad for this. We’ll go out in up to medium rain and wind. If it is rescheduled, it will be posted on the Discord and the event will be updated here.
  • Other Notes: You don’t need to RSVP if you don’t want to. Just turn up and enjoy.
