Hello adventure lovers in Wellington. This month we’re making the most of Wright’s Hill Fortress’s open day and exploring tunnels and hills.

  • Activity: After reaching the peak, we’ll start by exploring the fortress, and then we’ll branch out into the nearby walking paths that surround the peak and border Zealandia.
  • Start Location: Since there isn’t good public transport on public holidays to the peak and I don’t want to suck up tunnel exploration time with hiking, we’ll meet at nearby park and then carpool up to the peak. If we have more cars than needed, they’ll be able to remain parked in the start location.
If we have less cars than needed, then some people will need to walk 40 minutes uphill to the fortress — let’s hope that doesn’t happen.
Start location is Campbell Farm Memorial Plaque at Ben Burn Park near the corner of Scapa Terrace & Campbell St (car access might be via the south depending on construction).
42 Campbell Street, Karori, Wellington 6012
  • Start Time: Saturday 25 April, 1pm. We’ll wait for around 10 minutes before dividing into cars and heading up to the peak. If you’re late, message on the adventure channel on Discord so that me or someone else can let you know where we’re at and figure out how you can join us.
  • Minimum Cost: $10 entry into the fortress — CASH ONLY. Extra if you want to get something at their sausage sizzle.
  • Physical considerations: We’ll be driving up the main part of the hill, but depending on how busy the event is, we might need to walk up the final parts. We’ll be on our feet for about 2 hours walking.
  • Duration: They estimate 1 hour in the fortress. And we’ll spend about another hour wandering around the nearby bush paths. If you’d like to leave early, you can either walk downhill into Karori or drive off.
  • What to bring: Torch for going into tunnels, good solid footwear for walking (no jandals), appropriate clothing (including raincoat in case of a light dusting), your own drinks/water, light snacks.
  • Who's welcome: any person at least partly associated with the games industry and as many of their family/friends that would also like to join. Children welcome. From the information on the Wright’s Hill website, it’s unclear whether dogs are allowed in the tunnels. Dogs are allowed on leash and off leash in nearby areas though.
  • Contingency plan: If the weather is super bad, we’ll cancel (since the fortress won’t be open on other days).
  • Other Notes: You don’t need to RSVP if you don’t want to. Just turn up and enjoy.
