Am I actually designing an open world game? by Ash McAllan (Game Director, Avalanche)
When trying to learn about open world game design there are plenty of resources on how to design the open world, but what about the game loop and systems? Ash McAllan presents a simple three point checklist to make sure that the gameplay you're designing actually demands and engages with your game's open world.
Live service gaming by Matthew Laurence (Engagement Director, Avalanche)
Live service gaming offers a fascinating (and, yes, lucrative) business model with tremendous potential for long-term player engagement, but comes with significant challenges - not to mention a boatload of skepticism from devs and gamers alike.
This talk will explore best practices for creating a holistic and effective live ecosystem, offer a pragmatic series of "dos and don'ts" for ensuring success, and illustrate how the true nature of a healthy live product is neither the money-printer suits expect nor the predatory grindfest that internet hiveminds fear.
Speakers
Ash McAllan is an Australian game designer with a passion for design that is grounded in theory and resists patriarchy and traditional norms. She is the Game Director for the Generation Zero live team at Avalanche, and has previously worked with Star Stable, That Silly Studio, and Failbetter Games.
Matthew Laurence has been a video game designer for over seventeen years. Consistently delighted that people actually pay him to make games, Matthew has gone from Orlando and San Francisco all the way to Helsinki, Munich, Abu Dhabi, and Stockholm in the course of his career. During his industry time, he has focused much of his effort on economy, engagement, and systems design in the mobile, educational, and Live Service AAA markets.
