Workshop: Custom Gaming Hardware

Details

In this workshop, Radomir Dopieralski will introduce you to the world of custom game hardware:

We will start with an introduction to microcontroller programming and hobby electronics. We will see how to connect together a development board, a display, a couple of buttons and a speaker, and use that as a basic development platform.

Then we will take a quick look at the commercially available homebrew consoles, and will see how those can be used for our purposes.

Then the participants will be invited to try developing a game for one of the console prototypes. We will start with the "bouncing ball" tutorial from https://learn.adafruit.com/circuitpython-stage-game-library/overview and then each participant will go in their own direction.

The games developed by participants are of course their own and they are free to do with them whatever they like, but there will be an option for adding them as examples to the repository for the Stage game library.

Each participant will need a computer to work on, with a text editor and graphics editor of their choice, and a USB-C cable to connect the prototype device. After the workshop, the prototypes are expected to be returned by the participants.
