(Family-friendly) Crash Course on how to map with OpenStreetMap (OSM)

OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a wonderful Open Source data/technology platform that enables anyone in the world to map the spaces around them.
Governments, companies and other organizations depend on OSM as a free/affordable and privacy-respecting alternative to proprietary mapping options.
In this course, we cover:
- The different types of contributions: mapping, aerial footage, street level footage, etc
- Different mapping tools: web-based or native
- How to map buildings quickly and accurately
- How to add and validate addresses to mapped buildings automatically (if time allows)
Mapathon:
After training, we will map the buildings/houses around the events venue in Centurion.
Attendees are welcome to map until 4PM or leave earlier.
Lunch can be purchased by attendees at their own expense during the Mapathon. Attendees are requested to maintain basic decorum and hygiene when handling food/drinks.
(Note. This is a family-friendly event open to adults and mature teenagers with an adult supervisor. Attendees are not permitted to consume alcohol/inebriating substances during the event and should smoke in a designated area away from the teenagers)
Tools Needed:
- Your own laptop with a mouse

- (Optional) Install JOSM for a native mapping editor
A R50 refundable deposit is required in order to ensure that attendees show up for the event.
