Introduction to Game Development in C++

Hello all!

Welcome to the final C++ meetup of the autumn/winter season. In this session we will get a very brief introduction to game development!

Sigma Embedded Engineering will host us this time. We will be located on the 5th floor which is reachable with the elevator at reception.

Abstract

Game engines like Unreal and Unity dominate the industry today - but it wasn’t always this way, and plenty of games are still built without them. A rich ecosystem of open-source libraries makes it possible to create games using modern techniques such as entity-component-system (ECS) architecture and contemporary graphics APIs.

In this session, we’ll take a hands-on look at SDL3 and see how its core modules simplify building 2D, sprite-based games. We’ll also explore EnTT and learn how to leverage an ECS for clean design, flexibility, and performance.

By the end, you’ll understand the fundamentals well enough to build a simple Flappy Bird clone - and have a clear path forward to creating your own games.
