Full Moon SET over Boston
Details
This is an early morning photo shoot - one we've never done before!
We will capture a 99.2% moon SETTING over the Boston skyline (technically, not the full harvest moon, which rises at 11:47.) The moon sets at 5:58 A.M., sunrise is at 6:46am, giving us a mostly dark sky. Kevin has pointed out that there should be a number of buildings we could capture in the image from Tafts or if we want to walk a bit into the park.
Previous similar meetup
We will have four options:
- Continuous moon streak
- Assembled moon streak (from individual back-to-back images - try 1 s each)
- Single moon between or on top of buildings or over the skyline.
- Time lapse
To see how a moon streak is done, please read a previous meetup: How it's done
Long-range forecast looks fantastic with clear skies with 63 degrees, bring a light jacket.
The advantage of doing a moon streak at moon set is that you can do a proper high ISO preview to get the required exposure time and select the right ND filter. Keep in mind that the moon will set from left to right, the streak goes the other way as during moon rise.
For a moon streak, you will need: a sturdy tripod, a camera, a remote control/intervalometer, a long zoom lens of 200+ mm focal length (it's approximately 6 miles), a 6 stop or higher neutral density filter for that lens. For individual shots, the featured photo is what 200mm would give you.
The ICE 10-stop ND filter can be had very cheaply, it's a great filter with very minor color cast. Buy one for your largest lens and step-down rings for smaller lenses: 82 mm, 77 mm. For more flexibility, get the set of three filters for 3, 6, 9, 10, 13, 16, 19 stops: 3 filter set Get some step-up rings for smaller lenses.
As always in this group, strictly no guests, ever.
