10th Annual New Year's Day shoot: Bill Russell and Leonard Zakim Bridges
Details
The Zakim has always been a group favorite. Now, the state has been nice enough to dress up the North Washington bridge, deck it out in colored lights, and give it a new name. The Bill Russell bridge is shiny and new and offers some fun photographic opportunities for night shooters. I think it would be ungrateful of us to reject the state's gift, so I'm calling on GBNPers to welcome in the new year celebrating our new colorful bridge.
We'll be meeting down by the water, on the North End side of the bridge. From there, 24mm on a full-frame will get you the entire bridge and the Zakim in the background. The featured image comes courtesy of my Pentax APSC 17-70. I would have taken more but it was very cold and windy. If you put the bridge on your left, the Charlestown Navy Yard will be straight ahead, with the Bunker Hill Monument poking its peak out of the buildings. If you turn around, the top of the new State Street building juts out against the sky.
From our starting point, there's a big semicircular arc of a walkway that takes us under the bridge for interesting geometry of the underside. Or you can go up onto the bridge and shoot down the length with headlights coming or going or both.
And, if you want to go away from the bridge, I just found out about the Waterfront Ice Sculpture Stroll from the North End to the Seaport.
Yes, it will be cold. It is New Years Day, after all. Dress in layers, bring extra batteries for your camera, and look into reusable hand warmers. And maybe we'll find somewhere to warm up afterward.
No guests, and please check in with the organizer.
(Pay no attention to the Shake Shack location listed - the website wouldn't let me enter the actual location. The map is correct.)
