Strong Aurora Alert for tonight
Details
We have a very strong aurora alert for tonight, around 9 pm. Forecast is for partly cloudy skies, so we might be able to see it. I will be giving a talk, so I can't host this, the event is a suggestion for self-assignment.
Go somewhere with little light pollution looking north, ideally with a pond in front of you for reflections. North or west of Boston is good, ideally into New Hampshire. Look at this map to find suitable locations, many of which have been tried out.
The best time window is 8-10pm tonight, but it might start earlier or later. Might go on all night.
Take your fast and wide angle lenses, 10 to 20 mm, f/2.8 or wider. Take photos with 15 s exposure time, wide open aperture and choose your ISO to expose to the right. Bring spare batteries. Maybe take a timelapse and pick the best images. Sit in your car while the camera clicks away.
If there is aurora, you should see a green glow. If it gets more intense, you will see reds, sometimes purple and blue. The above image is from a similar event a few months ago.
Be careful when you roam offroad, it might be slippery. Dress warmly in layers.
