Tailwind CSS: A surprisingly friendly framework

CSS has come a long way, from big stylesheet files and naming conventions to fully component-driven UI frameworks like Bootstrap. In this talk, we’ll take a short journey through how we’ve traditionally styled web applications, the problems we tried to solve along the way, and why those solutions often came with trade-offs.

We’ll then dive into Tailwind CSS and explore how its utility-first approach challenges many long-held assumptions about “clean” CSS. By comparing Tailwind directly with frameworks like Bootstrap, we’ll look at its flexibility and developer experience.

This session isn’t a sales pitch, it’s an honest account by a junior developer of scepticism, experimentation, and genuine pleasant surprise at how a different way of thinking about CSS can simplify development rather than complicate it. Whether you’re firmly in the “semantic CSS” camp or just curious about the hype, you’ll leave with a clearer understanding of when Tailwind makes sense and why it might change how you build interfaces.
